BORDERS
BOOKS & MUSIC
Borders is one of those megalithic chains
that desperately wants to be your neighborhood bookstore. Although not as cozy as the local "mom and pop" stores
that Seattle is known for, Borders has tried to make its two-story downtown emporium feel like an intimate environment complete
with a café, comfy chairs, book signings, local music performances, and writing workshops. While it will never have
the character and culture fostered by local independents, Borders does have an exhaustive selection of titles from both
big and small publishing houses.

CONFOUNDED
BOOKS & HYPNO VIDEO
Freaked out by the corporate transformation
of Fremont, Confounded Books & Hypno Video now occupies a storefront in Belltown, on an artsy block of 2nd Ave. Like
its neighbors, Roq La Rue and Singles Going Steady, this bookstore caters to the counter-cultural connoisseur. It's where
to go to pick up the latest copy of Ugly Things or Maximimrocknroll, and to check out underground comics (think
Zap, Fantagraphics and Kitchen Sink type fare). The actual book selection ranges from the academic to the offbeat, with
an emphasis on lowbrow art and pop culture.
