Built in 1908 for one of the founders of the Port of Tacoma, Thornewood Castle is a 27,000-square foot Gothic Tudor manor, located on four acres of American Lake, and surrounded by old growth firs. Its hauntingly classic appearance was recently used as the location for a Stephen King television mini-series. Visitors are free to explore the half acre sunken English garden, swim, fish, or boat on the lake, or relax in gloriously appointed rooms. Both overnight guests and curious visitors can make arrangements for Thornewood's Afternoon Tea, which includes four-courses of traditional goodies, and an interesting tour of the castle and its grounds.

Built in 1889 as a wedding present for his wife Ann, George Starett's classic Victorian home possesses frescoed ceilings, a three-tiered staircase, and a beautiful view of the Sound.
